Wide Area Network (WAN)
A Wide area network (WAN) connects two or more Local area networks (LANs) so that both local area networks (LANs) can communicate with each other.
This is done when the range of the LAN has been exceeded (usually around 100m) and other means of technology is needed to bridge the networks. Wide area networks (WAN) can be installed for private organisations to share information with restricted access, or public networks with unrestricted access such as the internet.
What are the benefits of a Wide area network (WAN)?
- A Wide area network (WAN) extends all of the benefits of a Local area network (LAN) across a larger geographical area such as towns, cites, states and countries.
- Using the right technology such as Free space optics (FSO), you can use a WAN to transfer information across great distances, securely. Because FSO uses light to transfer information, it makes it almost impossible for hackers to identify and decrypt the transfer.
- WANs can transfer data and voice information the same as a LAN, however, sometimes at slower speeds depending on the carrier.
