Sony PlayStation Network Security Breach

Entertainment giant Sony has confirmed reports that millions of PlayStation network gamers may have had their personal details including credit card information stolen.

Over 77 million people have fell victim to online identity theft when a hacker broke into the Sony online games network which stored names, addresses and credit card information.

Sony realised their network had been hacked on April 19 when they shut down the PlayStation network keeping quiet about the breach until now. A communications spokes person for Sony said; "We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network".

Sony believes that the hackers have obtained names, addresses, e-mails, date of birth, PlayStation passwords and PS Network ID and is warning users to look out for telephone and e-mail scams.

Sony said that although no evidence exists that credit card information used for online purchases has been stolen, we cannot rule out this possibility. This network breach is believed to be the biggest online breach ever and Sony has not yet confirmed when they gaming network will be back online.

All types of organisations are affected by Network security and the cost to the organisations can be unlimited. The cost to Sony for this breach has not yet been reported, but the effect on their customers is already apparent with blogs and tweets about moving to other gaming platforms.
